The emerging district “Das Dörnberg” has defined its urban context with exciting, yet recognizable structures. The addition of the “Johanneshof” development with its well-designed open spaces provides a place that underscores the district’s unique character and quality of life where people can come together.
The design evolved from a large-scale structure that – contrary to the recommendations of the preliminary feasibility study – does not act as a mediator between the neighboring development sites. Instead, the residential complex becomes an unmistakable landmark with its own unique identity. Two S-shaped structures organize the space; the two courtyards created by the layout and the center passageway create generous urban openings and green space leading into the center of the district.
To set them apart from the neighboring public spaces, the courtyards belonging to the complex are at a higher elevation and positioned as semi-private spaces reserved for residents. The impression created by the complex blurs the boundary between inside and outside, much like the design of the façade itself. The front facing the urban area has a clear-cut edge – openings come in the form of recessed terraces. Towards the interior courtyards, the cantilevered balconies and terraces are arranged to make the façade softer and to create a more diffuse layer in the transition towards the private courtyard space. The concept includes a range of housing typologies that vary according to position.
