A new urban district is emerging in Regensburg’s old town, an area particularly sensitive to historic preservation concerns. With its prime positioning and prominence, Dörnbergforum acts as an identity-shaping gateway to this multifaceted district.
In response to the urban-planning context, the design offers two simple polygonal structures. Offset one from the other, the placement of the two structures creates tension and makes room for arcades and footpaths leading into the new district. The setting and the placement encourage dialogue and interaction between the buildings, which adds value in the quarter both in terms of the spatial layout and, thanks to the addition of public squares, in terms of social interaction. The structures themselves are designed to stabilize the space as elegant cornerstones of the new urban plan.
The façade’s folded, open and closed elements create an ambivalent impression of the buildings, observers perceive them as transparent or solid depending on their perspective. This sculptural aspect of the structure and the façade is very evocative of the new neighborhood’s character.
